Dear Mothman

Dear Mothman by Robin Gow

Four out of Five Magical Coffee Cups

Book in verse

I saw this book right after I saw a book at my local bookstore called ‘I’m in Love With Mothman.’  Is there an anniversary of mothman coming up? I know it’s only two books, but it is such a niche subject, and to see not one but two books about it within a week is just interesting, to say the least.

Anyway, Noah started to write to Mothman after his best friend, Lewis, and the only other trans student in his school passed away.  Lewis had been very interested in cryptids, and Noah seems to be writing to Mothman to grieve his friend. Later, Noah decides that proving that Mothman is real will be his science fair project. He is met with suggestions to pick a better topic, but his teachers seem to put forth effort to help him as best they can. I liked the suggestions that the teachers gave to make the project work.

Noah starts to make new friends and be more open about himself.  As the letters go on, you learn that Noah hasn’t told many people that he prefers to be called Noah. It seems that most, if not all, support his choices. Noah’s parents, teachers, and new friends all try to use the name Noah. This book is about a child grieving their best friend, learning to make new friends, and learning more about themselves. Of course, there is a lot of talk about Mothman.

Noah becomes increasingly obsessed with Mothman and even goes into the woods to capture proof of Mothman.  This is where I started to get a little confused with the book.  It was a strange ending but a sweet ending.  I would love to hear what others think happened in the woods.

Besides being a little confused by the ending, this is a lovely little book that I would love to see in a middle school library.
