The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden
Five out of Five Magical Coffee Cups

I know many people are hot and cold with Freida McFadden. Some love her. Some find her predictable. I love her. I love thrillers, and I find all of her books to be quick reads with at least one twist I never saw coming. I don’t mind books where I guess some of the twists. I feel like I should win a little award for guessing twists sometimes. I should put a sticker in my book journal for books I figured out before the end. On to the book….
Sydney lives in New York. She is in her thirties and single. Like many women her age, she is looking for men to date online. She is really focused on finding a man to marry, and even her mother is calling to remind her of her age and (not so helpfully) share news of other ‘older’ women having babies. It’s not too late Syd! (roll my eyes).
The book is told from two viewpoints. The second one is a man named ‘Tom,’ it is clearly a jump in time as his chapters always say “Before.” Before what? How before are we talking?
After coming home from a really bad date, Sydney is rescued by a mystery man. He doesn’t stick around long, and Sydney wonders if she just missed her chance at her dream man.
Suddenly, a woman is murdered in her building. The police don’t have much to go on with, but they think it was a man that the woman might have been dating. That is terrifying. I mean, dating is frustrating enough, but to think you could be murdered in your own home by your date? Ugh. I’ll stay single. My biggest fear is my TBR pile falling on me.
Anyway, Sydney is still out going on ‘meh’ dates when her mystery man shows up to rescue her once more! They begin dating, and she feels like everything is finally going right.
I really thought I had it figured out; you might even think you have it figured out from the little bit I shared. (I left a ton out) Nope! I was wrong. I was close, though. There were a few things that I did get right, and there was even one thing I joked about that ended up being right. I was like, ‘I called that!’ I got a few of the twists in this book. Admittedly, there were a few things I was way off on. I would give myself partial credit for solving this one! Should I put half a sticker in my book journal? Hmm…
I will read more books by Fredia McFadden. I love the crazy, almost unbelievable twists.
