A Pocket Full of Posies

A Pocket Full of Posies by Shawn Sarles

Three out of Five Magical Coffee Cups

You can tell from the cover that this book will be creepy!  This is my type of book!

Parker moves to a new town that has a very Stepford Wives feel. There are beautiful families and incredibly well-kept rose gardens all over town. All the kids attend the same private school and seem to be good kids. There is no mention of any other school; everyone seemingly has to go to the private school in town.

Parker has been chosen as the “Rose Duchess. “This ceremony gave me a ‘The Lottery’ vibe. Everyone seems excited about the opportunity, but they are also excited about Parker’s selection. They continually tell her that “Rosamund picked her!” Rosamund is a woman from the town”s history many years ago.

Parker starts having nightmares about Rosamund and the ‘Rose Duchess’ stuff. Everyone else is super excited for her to have been chosen and talks about how important she is now that she has been chosen.

It’s so creepy. Everyone keeps saying Rosamund chose her. Rosamund from the story that is 100s of years old? How?  Everyone just goes along with all of this. What town has so many people all believing the same stories and celebrations like this? I knew this could only go one of two ways: Hallmark or horror.  Judging by the cover, I knew where we were headed.

Parker does meet the one other person in town who is not going along with all this crazy “Duchess” stuff. She must first decide if she trusts him or her new friends.

It is creepy, and some crazy things are revealed at the end. I still have a lot of questions, but I guess this is another “just go with the crazy” or “sit back and enjoy” situation. I think this book would have made a really great episode of Supernatural. There might have been one similar, but I’ve yet to see all of the episodes.
