Roll Call: Dungeon Club

Roll Call: Dungeon Club by Molly Knox Ostertag and Xanthe Bouma

Fun start to a graphic novel series.

If you know a little bit about D&D it makes the book more fun! I can’t say if you know a lot about D&D if it is accurate.  I only know a little bit.

I like how the characters are introduced. Jess seems to think fully in D&D format, so when we meet different people, they are often accompanied by their “stats.” So, we get a little sidebar with their “type,” theater kid, chaotic neutral, for example. I loved that.

Jess and Olivia have been friends for a long time, and they have built their friendship around the game of D&D. But Olivia wants to bring more people into their game. When Olivia brings Tyler into their group, Jess is not happy. She doesn’t understand why it can’t just be her and Olivia like it has been for years!

Jess definitely makes some not so fantastic decisions both in the game and in real life, now she has to try and make amends to the people she hurt. It was cute how D&D was tied in throughout the book.

I tried hosting a D&D club at school, but I just didn’t understand the game. I ended up being just the adult who hosted the kids in the library at lunch. The kids ran it. It was interesting to see how they interacted with each other!
