Medusa: The Myth of Monsters #1 by Katherine Marsh
Action right away with this one. Ava has just started 7th grade. While in the library, Owen, a classmate she does not like, angers her to the point where she can’t keep calm. She has many things she usually does to keep her anger in check; her mom has taught her so many. But this time it didn’t work. The next thing she sees is Owen staring into space, as if he is frozen. Weird. He ends up recovering, so that’s good.
At home, Ava tells her mom what happened, and suddenly, she, along with her brother Jax, is sent off to boarding school—the same school her mom went to when she was little. You know something is up when, after one conversation, your parents are sending you to Italy for boarding school.
Soon, they discover that this is a school for the descendants of mythological monsters. It is a place for them to learn how to control their powers to fit in with society. I’m getting Percy Jackson meets the Descendants with this one.
I really got into the different monsters! I am a fan of spooky stuff, so this was really interesting. I found myself researching the different monsters as I read.
Of course, the school isn’t what everyone thinks it is, and Ava finds herself in trouble.
I really liked this book! Maybe it’s because I like mythology. Maybe it’s because I like the spookier stuff, so all the monster talk was interesting to me. Whatever it might have been, I am excited to read the second book in this series!
