Miss Quinces

Miss Quinces by Kat Fajardo

Graphic Novel

Sue wants to spend the summer reading and spending time with her friends at summer camp. Instead, she is heading to Honduras to visit family.  She is already annoyed with the lack of phones, cable, and internet when her mom tells her she will be having her quinceañera while they are there. Sue doesn’t like parties, dancing, public speaking, or bright colors. Now she is shopping for heels, writing a speech, and getting fitted for a bright pink dress. But while she is there she also learns a lot about her family.

In the back of the book, the author explains all about quinceañeras. She goes over everything, from the church to the party and all the little details in between, such as the dances, the importance of a tiara, a ring, and even the shoes (transitioning from flats to heels). I knew very little about quinceañeras, so I appreciated learning about this.

It was a quick read, but entertaining.
