Roll For Danger: The Cursed Catacombs

Roll For Danger: The Cursed Catacombs by Nick Eliopulos

Oh, this looks fun! This book combines elements of a choose-your-own-adventure book and the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. I know the kids at my school love D&D! You need to have your character sheet filled out before you play. The cool thing about this is that you can read the book over and over, starting off differently each time by having your character sheet filled in differently. Maybe this time you will have more cleverness than charisma. Will that help you through your adventure? I also love that it’s not simply choosing one thing over the other. You have to factor in your Health and Mana.

This book requires a bit more focus than the average book, but I think many students will appreciate that. I suppose if you enjoy D&D, you’ll likely love this book as well. There are some parts where you do get to choose whether or not you want to do something, but it will cost you Mana points or possibly Health points. At other times, you must roll a six-sided die to move forward. For example, you are asked a question, and to answer it, you have to roll the die for a ‘Cleverness Check’. If you roll a 5 or higher, you go to one page; if you roll a 4 or lower, you go to another page. It’s really fun!  The only possible downside is that I will need to ensure my students have access to a six-sided die. I have plenty in the library (will I ever get them back?), but there are also digital dice online.

Seth is an apprentice for a wizard named Bristleboor. He is the last of the apprentices as the others have already fallen to all sorts of horrible events.

I can’t wait to hand this over to my students! There will be a long waitlist for this one.
