The Naturals

The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Seventeen-year-old Cassie is really amazing at reading people. She can observe you for mere seconds and know so much about you. It’s sort of amazing. One day, as she is working her waitressing job, a customer leaves a card asking her to contact them. “Them” being the FBI! What does the FBI want with her?  Turns out they have a program that uses teens like Cassie, who have the same incredible natural abilities that could help solve cold cases.

Cassie is sent to a home with teens similar to her, but with different talents. They all have different reasons for agreeing to be a part of this program.

As they are being trained, they snoop around and find out that their FBI trainers are working a case dealing with a serial killer. Of course, the teens want to be a part of this. They also find that they might be a little too close to this case and are now in danger of being the next victim.

This book definitely kept me interested all the way through. It was a little more violent than I expected. I had no issue with that, but I do work in a school, so I might have to warn students before they check this out.  The only thing I didn’t like about this book was the love triangle. I couldn’t understand why we are dealing with that when every other page is death, violent acts, tons of blood, etc. It was weird to read all about these crimes and then suddenly read about her hair being gently brushed from her face and him leaning in close enough for a kiss. It just felt weird. But these teens aren’t your normal teens, so maybe this wasn’t as insane for them. I’ll still make time to read the next book in the series.
