The Wild Robot Protects by Peter Brown
The third in the Wild Robot series! I love Roz!
As soon as this book starts, the island animals learn that a poison tide is headed toward the island. Soon enough, the tide comes in, and it messes up their balanced ecosystem. All the animals are moving inland, causing problems for the others. In a random moment, Roz falls into some water and learns that her new body is waterproof! What else is she capable of doing?
Because Roz can go into the water and handle the poisoned water, she decides it would be best for her to head out in search of an ancient shark said to hold the answers to getting rid of the poison. This shark was said to live in the Northern Ocean. So off Roz went! It was interesting to hear about Roz walking along the ocean floor. I thought she would swim or at least use a raft and just paddle. But she walked! Because she walked, she met a lot of new creatures! They all seem to be fine with her fairly quickly. I thought I was going to be creeped out about the ocean, but I was more scared when Roz got to the Northern Ocean. Those Icebergs were terrifying!
The ancient shark was also an amazing creature. She was thought to be over 500 years old! She lets Roz know the source of the poison. Spoilers from here on forward!
There is a mining station in the middle of the ocean. When the robots dig into the rocks, dust is released, which is causing the poison. Roz tries to reason with the station managers (humans), and there is a funny back-and-forth between them. Humans are mining for metal to make robots. Roz tries to explain the problem. The humans say, “Can you believe we have to convince a robot why robots are important?” and Roz responds, “Can you believe I have to convince humans why their own environment is important?” I thought that was funny. Sad, in a way, but funny. There is a happy, satisfying ending, but I do hope there is another book in the series.
I said before in my other reviews that I did not see the movie, but I know that it was somewhat popular with my students, so I really hope they make movies for the rest of the books in the series.
