Sinister Sisters and Other Terrifying Tales by Roseanne A. Brown
I am a big fan of the old TV show, “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” I was so excited when I saw they made a graphic novel version. This is the second book I have read in that series. Like the TV show, we have a group of friends who meet in the forest to tell spooky stories. The graphic novel contains three of those tales.
The first story is about Bushwalkers. This was a creepy tale of monsters that eat kids who don’t perform well in school. I guess that is one way to get your kids to study.
The second story was about a Spirit Drum that could grant wishes. We all know that wishes come with a price. There are also rules that come with the drum. Why would someone give such a powerful item to a child?
The last story was about the Sinister Sisters. I think they were either old gods or something more like mimics. A family builds a home on what used to be a god’s home, a place where people would bring offerings. The gods (mimics?) do not like the idea of someone building a home on top of their old home. Understandable. This one reminded me of the movie Poltergeist. Well, any haunted house movie, when you find out that the house was built on top of either an old graveyard or something like that.
I enjoyed it! I hope they come out with more! The illustrations are really good. Very creepy.
