Kamala Khan is an ordinary girl from Jersey City — until she’s suddenly empowered with extraordinary gifts. But who truly is the new Ms. Marvel? Teenager? Muslim? Inhuman? Find out as she takes the Marvel Universe by storm! When Kamala discovers the dangers of her newfound powers, she unlocks a secret behind them, as well. Is Kamala ready to wield these immense new gifts? Or will the weight of the legacy before her be too much to bear? Kamala has no idea, either. But she’s comin’ for you, Jersey!”

I had never really been a graphic novel fan.  I always struggled with so much on each page.  But now, I finally decided to give them a try.  A lot of my hesitance has been from when I was young and it has become one of those “well, I just assumed I wouldn’t like it” type of thing at this point.  I have also been a fan of the Marvel movies and I didn’t want to be one of those people who only see the movies and then consider myself a true Marvel fan. Now, I can say, “I read comics!”.

Ok, so why did I pick this one over all the others?

1. I had never heard of Ms. Marvel so I wouldn’t be swayed by the movie portrayal.

2. I liked the idea of a female superhero.

3. I was intrigued by the fact that this particular hero is Muslim.

I feel a little odd trying to review this because I have zero reference for graphic novels.  I will say it was entertaining, I was never bored.  I think this was a great example of graphic novels.  So even though I  cannot with any certainty say that this particular graphic novel can stand up to other graphic novels, I can say I enjoyed it enough that I will be on the lookout for the second volume and I am also interested in finding other graphic novels.  Yeah, so this book changed my mind on graphic novels, so there’s that.

Can I get a high five for the most useless review ever?  But from here on out I will have a basis for comparison.  You got to start somewhere people.
