Apparently, this book is inspired by the true story of a Monterey Bay Aquarium program that pairs orphaned otter pups with surrogate mothers.
Odder had been born in the ocean, but something happened to her mother, so she was brought to the Aquarium. Here she learned how to be an otter. Once she had learned enough, she was released back into the ocean. She loved to play! After some time, Odder is unfortunately attacked by a shark, and she is brought back to the Aquarium for surgery.
There is an author’s note at the end that tells the story of the real otters this story was based on. It was a sweet story but made even cuter when you find out about the real otter’s lives!
